Seishun Otome Banchou!

Since I do not own this manga and it has not been translated into English, I read this on sites with fan translations.  I think the translations were pretty good, but I may have gotten some things wrong.

This series is 13 chapters long, spread out between 3 volumes (apparently).  My review will be below, and if you continue reading below the stars, you will see my explanation and my recounting of what I read.

Every post past this point will be a spoiler, so please read ahead with caution!

Review time!

5 star review

Plot: 1 star. I guess if this manga has a plot it’d be about getting Touma to see the real Mihane which I think he absolutely does. I don’t think it’s the simple plot of “getting together with Touma” or even him noticing her because I think it’s more than that. He had to get to know her; that was the original bet(deal?) in chapter 1, and I think this series completes that plot. So, yes, it develops a plot, sticks to the plot, and completes the plot (though the relationship is ongoing, and they definitely have more to learn about each other; that final chapter teaches all of us a lot about each character x’D ).

Art: 1 star. Hands down, 1 star, and I wish I could give more simply for the diverse expressions. All of the expressions crack me up in this story! And I love the art style aside from the crazy expressions. The characters are cute and diverse, and everyone looks so soft and pretty (unless they’re not supposed to which is its own great thing). Beautiful art, beautiful characters, and they’re all very expressive. I knew what was going on at each point, even Mihane’s intricate dances and reactions xD

Story Progression: 1 star. I think this manga does a really good job with story telling. I think the transitions between chapters are great; the use of flash backs are well placed. The story as a whole flows really well; nothing feels rushed about the pacing or about how the relationships develop.

Genre: 1 star. This manga is so spot on as comedy, romance, and shoujo! There is no doubt in my mind about how funny this manga is; I’ve read it at least five times now, and it still makes me laugh myself to tears. The development of Mihane and Touma’s relationship is definitely romantic. Even before they’re in a romantic relationship, Mihane is gearing the story towards trying to get in a romantic relationship with Touma, so romantic vibes are there at the start. And with the female main perspective, romantic issues, and general school life shenanigans, then I definitely say it’s a shoujo. I guess it could also be given school life, but that’s more of a sub genre that’s optional; definitely not required.

Enjoyment: 1 star. I WANT TO GIVE SO MUCH MORE THAN ONE STAR!! I love this manga so much!! Between the comedy and the art, there’s also so much story! I LOVE how well the manga balances ridiculous reactions and expressions with actual common sense reactions. I like that it points out shoujo tropes and blows them out of the water. I like that the characters think and react in healthy ways as they develop. I like the ridiculous stuff when it’s not important and then the serious talks and mature reasoning when it is important. I like that the best friend is absolutely terrifying and is a complete troll despite looking like an angel xD I like that the main character can accept when she’s harassed her love interest into being mad at her, and she understands that yes, that was her fault! I like when a gangster looking character attacks out of nowhere that that is actually questioned by the main character and is even reprimanded by the gangster’s friend! This is a short series, but it has a lot of heart and a lot of laughter, and the art is still amazing while also being hilarious. Kudos all around.

If you need a quick read to cheer up your day, then definitely read this one. If you ever have the opportunity to own it, I absolutely encourage you to buy this. The mangaka deserves every penny and yen and so much more for creating this series.

This story has reached and/or surpassed my criteria, so it has earned 5 stars!
I highly recommend anyone to read this if they like crazy facial expressions!

I do not own Seishun Otome Banchou! (since it hasn’t been translated into English).  I’m reading from fan translations online.  I am going to be doing shorthand descriptions on each chapter.  These descriptions are really more of a reminder to myself about what all I have been able to read so far.  Sorry if this bothers anyone!  I will do a full description on the final review page of each series I read.

Every post past this point will be a spoiler, so please read ahead with caution!

ch7: Mihane oversleeps and is running late to school, so she jumps a fence and dumps everything out of her bag, leaving behind a notebook of poems about her love for Touma. Fujiki finds it and reads it out loud to the class, but the names are coded (poorly; everyone figures out she’s writing about Touma) and there’s no author’s name. Mihane denies writing it and even throws Konno under the bus as a suspect. Touma decides they should put the notebook back, but he, Fujiki, Maria, and Mihane stay behind “see who the owner is” -even though Maria and Mihane know who it is. it gets late, and Fujiki and Maria fall asleep. Touma asks again if Mihane wrote the notebook, and she continues to deny it. with no other course of action, Mihane goes to get a bat from the sports closet to hit Touma over the head to wipe his memory!! Omg, girl!!! he decodes her name as beauty wing before she can hit him, and she goes on a rampage xD he thinks she looks so cool doing it!! x’DDD but he also realizes he might really die this time, so he reads more to figure out that a hug will stop her rampage. it works xD (my poor neighbors; I can’t stop laughing at this manga). she asks what he thinks of the poems, and he starts fixing her grammar and kanji xD poor girl

ch8: the class is going on a 3 day Rinkan trip, and Mihane & Maria are in Touma’s group with all his friends; Touma’s team leader. during the hike, Fujiki and Touma fall into a cave, and Mihane and Maria fall in after them when they try to find them. no one’s hurt, but Fujiki’s panicking and Maria’s scared, too. Mihane knows how to survive in the wilderness, though, because she goes on trips with her grandfather every year, including ancient ruins and deserted islands. Touma’s calm because he’s read books. while they hike back to the trail, Touma starts getting more flustered around Mihane who’s so calm and confident. he tries to sort out his feelings while they take a break, but then a bear appears. Fujiki and Maria get away, but Touma stays behind to try and help Mihane and act as her shield if nothing else. she’s so moved, she fights the bear x’DD she’s so intense, she scares it off, and help arrives as Mihane carries Touma princess-style to safety (he passed out after receiving a head injury). once he’s safe, Mihane passes out, too.
Fujiki tells Touma all then when he wakes up later, so Touma runs off to see Mihane. she passed out from hunger before; she’s fine xD but he was worried; he won’t let her go–! (dokidoki) then his friends open the door, pushing them into an accidental kiss

ch9: Mihane’s shocked, Touma’s panicking, they’re both so worked up and freaked out and being adorable teens that Touma’s head injury re-opens; while trying to treat it, Touma’s friends see them and think she’s attacking him xD Touma sets them straight before returning to the infirmary. later that night, Touma can’t sleep, so Fujiki talks to him and convinces him the heart-racing experience is the suspension bridge theory; meaning that the exhilaration of the moment is what caused his heart to race, not Mihane. Touma goes to sleep after that, but Mihane doesn’t sleep all night. by the next morning, she’s convinced herself to act normal and to not get her hopes up! she’s leveled up her cool factor, though, so when she greets Touma good morning (looking super cool), he blushes and responds like a nervous school girl xDDD Maria finds this wonderful and begins trolling the situation
the group’s supposed to write a report about their trip so far, but Touma can’t concentrate, and it’s bothering Fujiki, so Fujiki takes matters into his own hands and makes Touma ask for Mihane’s e-mail address. They’re both flustered, so Fujiki and Maria leave them alone. they manage to exchange e-mails, and Mihane’s really happy. Touma realizes then that he’s liked her all along. over with Fujiki and Maria, Fujiki worries about Touma getting betrayed again.
later that night, Mihane’s trying to write an e-mail to Touma, but it’s too long, so Maria re-writes a short version that gets sent by accident xD when Touma reads it, he tells Mihane that he likes her, too <3333 and he asks her to be his girlfriend

ch10: Mihane’s so surprised she punches herself in the face to make sure it’s not a dream. it’s not; it’s real. she goes to hug Touma and falls out of bed xD (Rinkan is apparently the name of her school). she’s glad to have had such a nice dream and goes to school as normal. there Touma greets her for the first time as Mihane (he’s been saying Hirata up to this point); it wasn’t a dream!! apparently after his confession, Mihane was so happy she danced into the night and yelled to the forest that she was a winner; when she finally passed out, Maria took her home. Touma thinks it’s charming that Mihane expressed her feelings with her whole body; Mihane’s moved that he’s so open minded xD they continue to be adorkable all the way to school, and everyone notices
when Konno confronts Mihane about it later, Mihane decides that they shouldn’t tell anyone that they’re dating because of what it’ll do to Touma’s reputation; he shuts her up by feeding her his doughnut xD he doesn’t care what others say because it’s none of their business, and he and Mihane shouldn’t let other people affect their happiness. she’s reassured by this, but throughout the day, people keep talking behind their backs, judging them, and it ticks her off. but Touma helps calm her down and reminds her not to focus on them. Maria and Fujiki watch from afar, and though Maria’s happy, Fujiki is still concerned for his friend.
before leaving, Touma has to go return a book, and while Mihane’s waiting for him, she gets attacked by Micchan, friend of Kanon, with a HAMMER! Mihane’s fine, but she’d like to know why a stranger just attacked her with a hammer; she’s told to mind her own business. … (I don’t think Micchan’s very smart; she seems quite impulsive, instead of thinking things through).
through flashbacks, we learn that Touma went out with Kanon in middle school. and at the end of the chapter, they meet again (dun, dun, dunnn)

ch11: Touma agrees that he knew Kanon in middle school but he says they weren’t close, which Kanon also said. Mihane decides to trust her boyfriend, and they go eat sweets together. once Touma’s home, he deletes Kanon’s number from his phone (good boy; finally moving on is hard, but it’s healthy); through this we learn her full name is Mimori Kanon. later, he calls Mihane who thinks it’s her mom, so she answers the phone by yelling; she apologizes when she learns it’s Touma xD Mihane has to get groceries from the next town, and Touma agrees to go with her; the trip quickly turns into a competitive race, but Touma’s feeling better by the end. the fact that he was off at all has Mihane worried, though.
Micchan (actually Hirota Michiru) confronts Mihane later and reveals to her that Kanon and Touma dated; she’s sure Touma’s only dating Mihane to help himself forget Kanon. Mihane knows he’s not like that, but she still has to know for herself what happened. Maria -who knew Micchan previously because their uncles were close- tells Mihane that Kanon was the one who cheated on Touma and ended the relationship.
Touma made a box lunch for Mihane, and even though it’s delicious, she can’t forget what Micchan said or how confused her heart feels, so after the meal (after school?) she goes to meet Kanon

ch12: while meeting with Kanon, Mihane learns the truth. Kanon pretended to cheat on Touma to make him hate and forget her; he always put her first and himself last; she hated that he wasn’t taking care of himself. she wants him to end up with someone who cares for him equally and can spoil him sometimes, someone who’s able to be there for him. Kanon’s about to go overseas to study; she can’t give him that kind of time, so she broke up with him in a cruel way. even though Mihane’s learned a lot, she still doesn’t know what to do. she brings all of this up to Touma and even throws in her own insecurities about “why would he choose me?”; he’s disappointed in her and leaves. the class changes desks again, and he’s no longer sitting by her; she’s not sure what to do anymore, but she’s convinced he already hates her because she is insecure. when she tries to talk to Touma again, Micchan appears and asks him to meet Kanon again. he agrees.
Mihane tries to let him go, but she realizes that she has to be true to herself, and truly, she likes him. she races to the meeting and does the best entrance ever, sweeping Touma off his feet and holding him princess style while she delivers an amazing speech about her feelings and telling Kanon that she (Kanon) must be true to herself too and become happy because Mihane will make sure Touma becomes happy. she whisks Touma away, and Kanon tells Micchan she’s pretty sure Touma was going to tell her the same thing (aww, understanding) ❤
while running away with Touma in her arms, Mihane trips and immediately apologizes for everything; she’s sure Touma must hate her and want to break up, and she can’t blame him; she let her insecurities create doubt and rift between them, and she didn’t trust him. he forgives her and tells her that she healed the scar Kanon left in him a long time ago (AWWW!! <333 ) Mihane calls him Yoshihiro for the first time and asks him to make lunch for her again, and he agrees ❤

ch13: “Being pushed into a corner is what every girl in the world wishes for.” …. this is the opening line to this final chapter, and I just cannot even anymore x’DDDDD
so Mihane and Maria device a plan to try and make this happen. they get Touma to play hide and seek with them, so he can be “it” and chase after Mihane– except that doesn’t happen. Mihane becomes it. and she chases him into a corner. and it’s hilariously beautiful, and I’m still laughing, and it’s been at least five minutes since I finished reading this chapter, and I’m still laughing about it. Please go read this; it’s so amazing <x’DDDDD

I need this series to be translated into English. I need to own this series somehow. (and according to the picture at the top, this series is 3 volumes long, not a one shot like I thought, so my bad there, but I still really want to own it!)

Seishun Otome Banchou!, part 1

After Soul Eater, I wanted to read something I’ve never read before, but then I realized I wanted to read something simply hilarious to get me ready for the unknown. So, I have chosen one of my favorite manga. Sadly, there is no official English translation right now, so I will be reading from fan translations online.

seishun otome banchou!Google finally failed me! I had to get this image from:

I do not own this manga, so I will be reading fan translations online.  I am going to be doing shorthand descriptions on each chapter.  These descriptions are really more of a reminder to myself about what all I have been able to read so far.  Sorry if this bothers anyone!  I will do a full description on the final review page of each series I read.

ch1: Hirata Mihane, main character, daughter of the infamous “dark demon” and the “mad hound woman”, got the worst of both her parents genetics; her nickname at school is Satsujinki xD her best friend, Maria, who is a quarter Irish, got the best of her parent’s genetics, and she loves how interesting and expressive her friend, Mihane, always is xD Mihane is in love with Touma, the pretty boy in her grade, but everyone always misreads her expressions, so all his friends think that she hates him.
seeing her stare, he tries to confront her -like trying to pick a fight with her- and she ends up confessing because she can’t think of what else to do xD before he can reject her, she asks for 3 days so they can get to know each other, and he actually agrees to a date! Maria is actually very little help when it comes to getting mentally and physically ready for the date (Maria is such a troll xD )
the date starts awkward, but Touma wants to get to know the real Mihane, so she loosens up. when some girls start to badmouth him for dating someone so ugly (so rude; I think she’s pretty cute when she’s not going crazy), Mihane attacks them SPECTACULARLY! Touma laughs for the rest of the date, so before day 2, Mihane does her best to learn how to actually cook.
she stays up all night to make something that looks good, but when she takes it to Touma, she hears his friends laughing about their date and saying he only did it for a bet. she confronts them by grabbing a CHAINSAW, cutting through the door, pummeling all of Touma’s friends, but she can’t hit Touma. she says that even if it was for a bet or just to mess with her, she had fun. she runs off crying and forgets the lunchbox, which Touma finds.
Mihane yells at the sky about handsome men being jerks, and Maria tries(?) to help? when Touma shows up and bows in apology. Mihane turns away from him/refuses the apology, so he throws her now empty bento box at her head xD he left a note in the box to tell her that her cooking was tasty (awww~!). when she turns back to talk to him, he’s collapsed from his stomach ache; he still got poisoned by her cooking despite all her hard work to learn xD Mihane picks him up PRINCESS STYLE to take him to the hospital (he is impressed by her strength xD )

ch2: it’s been a month, and Touma never gave a reply to Mihane’s feelings, so Mihane thinks she’s been rejected. Maria points out through some trolling that Mihane should just ask him -or give up (such a heartless troll, Maria; you really are an adorable devil xD ).
so, Mihane casually stalks Touma but gets found out by his friends who somehow think it’s a good idea to taunt her by bringing up the time she wielded a chainsaw against them. she lashes out and knocks all 3 friends out. she then helps Touma carry them to the infirmary. he still hasn’t looked at her, so she thinks she’s hated, but then he glances at her and bursts out laughing. he explains he didn’t ask her out as a prank or a bet before and that he really did have a good time; he’s been holding back because it’s rude to laugh at someone so much. she confesses she thought he hated her, and he admits that even if she hates him, he could never hate her (Mihane, I’m dokidoki-ing right there with you!). he still doesn’t answer her confession, but she’s happy just to know that she’s not hated ❤
when girls see them near each other and begin to question his tastes, though, Mihane decides to ask Maria to help make her pretty again. Touma’s main friend (the one with a hat) is named Fujiki. many make-up shenanigans later, Touma finally talks to Mihane one-on-one, and he finds out why she started all this make-up stuff. he thinks it’s best when she’s her real self, but he’s not looking to get a girlfriend right now. Mihane goes NUTS! the room is left in disarray, but Touma is unharmed. feeling embarrassed, she jumps from the window -2 stories up-, lands easily, poses and everything, then runs off embarrassed. Touma found the whole thing amazing.
when seats are re-assigned, Touma swaps with someone in order to sit next to Mihane (that’s called giving MIXED SIGNALS, Touma!)

ch3: Konno Amika, another girl in the class, gets to sit on Touma’s other side (I think she also swapped). when Touma continues to pay her attention and be nice, Mihane goes to Maria for advice/help. Konno shows up and acts like Mihane doesn’t exist (that’s called bullying >=( ).
the next day(?), Maria steals Mihane’s textbook so Mihane has to share with Touma -good job, Maria; you go, girl! this proves that Konno doesn’t want Mihane near Touma -which was obvious anyway. also, Maria’s name is apparently Ono Maria, and Touma’s name is Touma Fujima (or Fujima Touma? Idk which; the teacher called him Fujima). later that day, Konno’s rampaging at Mihane’s foot locker. while waiting for Konno and her friends to leave, Mihane overhears that the only reason Konno likes Touma is because he’s handsome and she’s cute; she doesn’t care about him or his personality. Mihane attacks her and her friends by flipping up their skirts just in time for Fujiki and Touma to see. Fujiki thanks Mihane and Touma laughs and says she’s amazing. after everyone goes home, Fujiki reminisces that Mihane only does stuff like that when people bad mouth Touma, and Touma reflects that he’s a terrible person

ch4: they’re making cupcakes in home ec! Mihane can apparently make desserts well because she learned from her uncle who studied as a patisserie in France for 10 years. she wants Touma to try her cupcakes, but he says he’ll just look. Konno convinces him to eat them but also try hers “so she can improve”. Konno’s mother is also a professional chef. I love how Mihane makes cupcakes; she’s so intense during the process then so calm while they bake xDDD Maria tries her cupcake, and it’s delicious! but she still gets poisoned… she’s now more immune to poison, though, so bonus! also, she got to take pictures of Mihane for her horror blog xD
the next day, Konno swaps out Mihane’s beautiful looking cupcakes with terrible looking ones, then eats the tasty ones. this backfires. while Mihane’s looking for the cupcakes she actually made, Konno gets sick while Touma is fine, so he realizes that Konno ate them! he goes off to find Mihane once he gets the other cupcakes back from Konno, then eats one. she tries to make him spit it back out, but he doesn’t, so he gets sick. Mihane carries him like a princess again, but he’s way more embarrassed since they’re at school. she quiets him with the handsome face of a prince xDDDD he thinks she looks so cool x’DDD

ch5: Touma gets a lot of confessions. Mihane accidentally overhears one and gets caught by Touma. she offers to be his bug repellent because of her “hideous” face, but he refuses. she thinks it’s because he doesn’t want her around that much. still, when girls start appearing at class, Mihane takes it upon herself to intervene without Touma realizing (not her best plan; if guy says “no”, maybe actually listen to his request) because she knows he doesn’t like hurting their feelings by turning them down. Fujiki points this out to Touma because he really had no idea. the next time a confession happens, he holds up a mirror and startles Mihane. she explains why she’s doing it, and he calls her annoying. she’s shocked, hurt, but she realizes and accepts that he’s right; she’s been harassing him and going against his wishes; that’s not what friends do or what people should do (this manga writes beautiful characters; they’re both ridiculous and amazingly real). Mihane leaves to go cry into the sunset with Maria

ch6: Mihane’s still dwelling on angering Touma, and it’s literally affecting her character xD so Maria hits her in the face with her bag, then gives her sagely advice (tough love, Maria; sometimes we need that from our friends). Mihane tries to follow Maria’s advice, but that’s easier said than done (I feel you, girl). after getting bored in the infirmary, she leaves and runs into Touma who was coming to give her a set of notes. while they chat, a group of girls see them, so Mihane runs away because she doesn’t want to cause him any more trouble.
while sitting in the park after school, she overhears girls from another school planning to ambush Touma and make him cry (apparently his name is Touma Yoshihiro; I have no idea where Fujima came from before). she’s not sure what to do; he doesn’t want her to intervene anymore, but he’s literally going to be attacked! she takes the hit in his place, even knowing it may make him mad at her, but he drags her out of there after and gives her his jacket to wipe her face with. he sees her as a girl, and he didn’t want her involved because he knows being called ugly all the time has to affect her; he was trying to protect her from herself. it really did bother her, and the fact that he noticed, makes her cry into his jacket again -but she gets pie all over her face again xDDD he calls her his important friend, and she realizes he must be the kind of person who falls in love gradually ❤
