Seishun Otome Banchou!, part 1

After Soul Eater, I wanted to read something I’ve never read before, but then I realized I wanted to read something simply hilarious to get me ready for the unknown. So, I have chosen one of my favorite manga. Sadly, there is no official English translation right now, so I will be reading from fan translations online.

seishun otome banchou!Google finally failed me! I had to get this image from: https://myanimelist.net/manga/70219/Seishun_Otome_Banchou

I do not own this manga, so I will be reading fan translations online.  I am going to be doing shorthand descriptions on each chapter.  These descriptions are really more of a reminder to myself about what all I have been able to read so far.  Sorry if this bothers anyone!  I will do a full description on the final review page of each series I read.

Every post past this point will be a spoiler, so please read ahead with caution!

ch1: Hirata Mihane, main character, daughter of the infamous “dark demon” and the “mad hound woman”, got the worst of both her parents genetics; her nickname at school is Satsujinki xD her best friend, Maria, who is a quarter Irish, got the best of her parent’s genetics, and she loves how interesting and expressive her friend, Mihane, always is xD Mihane is in love with Touma, the pretty boy in her grade, but everyone always misreads her expressions, so all his friends think that she hates him.
seeing her stare, he tries to confront her -like trying to pick a fight with her- and she ends up confessing because she can’t think of what else to do xD before he can reject her, she asks for 3 days so they can get to know each other, and he actually agrees to a date! Maria is actually very little help when it comes to getting mentally and physically ready for the date (Maria is such a troll xD )
the date starts awkward, but Touma wants to get to know the real Mihane, so she loosens up. when some girls start to badmouth him for dating someone so ugly (so rude; I think she’s pretty cute when she’s not going crazy), Mihane attacks them SPECTACULARLY! Touma laughs for the rest of the date, so before day 2, Mihane does her best to learn how to actually cook.
she stays up all night to make something that looks good, but when she takes it to Touma, she hears his friends laughing about their date and saying he only did it for a bet. she confronts them by grabbing a CHAINSAW, cutting through the door, pummeling all of Touma’s friends, but she can’t hit Touma. she says that even if it was for a bet or just to mess with her, she had fun. she runs off crying and forgets the lunchbox, which Touma finds.
Mihane yells at the sky about handsome men being jerks, and Maria tries(?) to help? when Touma shows up and bows in apology. Mihane turns away from him/refuses the apology, so he throws her now empty bento box at her head xD he left a note in the box to tell her that her cooking was tasty (awww~!). when she turns back to talk to him, he’s collapsed from his stomach ache; he still got poisoned by her cooking despite all her hard work to learn xD Mihane picks him up PRINCESS STYLE to take him to the hospital (he is impressed by her strength xD )

ch2: it’s been a month, and Touma never gave a reply to Mihane’s feelings, so Mihane thinks she’s been rejected. Maria points out through some trolling that Mihane should just ask him -or give up (such a heartless troll, Maria; you really are an adorable devil xD ).
so, Mihane casually stalks Touma but gets found out by his friends who somehow think it’s a good idea to taunt her by bringing up the time she wielded a chainsaw against them. she lashes out and knocks all 3 friends out. she then helps Touma carry them to the infirmary. he still hasn’t looked at her, so she thinks she’s hated, but then he glances at her and bursts out laughing. he explains he didn’t ask her out as a prank or a bet before and that he really did have a good time; he’s been holding back because it’s rude to laugh at someone so much. she confesses she thought he hated her, and he admits that even if she hates him, he could never hate her (Mihane, I’m dokidoki-ing right there with you!). he still doesn’t answer her confession, but she’s happy just to know that she’s not hated ❤
when girls see them near each other and begin to question his tastes, though, Mihane decides to ask Maria to help make her pretty again. Touma’s main friend (the one with a hat) is named Fujiki. many make-up shenanigans later, Touma finally talks to Mihane one-on-one, and he finds out why she started all this make-up stuff. he thinks it’s best when she’s her real self, but he’s not looking to get a girlfriend right now. Mihane goes NUTS! the room is left in disarray, but Touma is unharmed. feeling embarrassed, she jumps from the window -2 stories up-, lands easily, poses and everything, then runs off embarrassed. Touma found the whole thing amazing.
when seats are re-assigned, Touma swaps with someone in order to sit next to Mihane (that’s called giving MIXED SIGNALS, Touma!)

ch3: Konno Amika, another girl in the class, gets to sit on Touma’s other side (I think she also swapped). when Touma continues to pay her attention and be nice, Mihane goes to Maria for advice/help. Konno shows up and acts like Mihane doesn’t exist (that’s called bullying >=( ).
the next day(?), Maria steals Mihane’s textbook so Mihane has to share with Touma -good job, Maria; you go, girl! this proves that Konno doesn’t want Mihane near Touma -which was obvious anyway. also, Maria’s name is apparently Ono Maria, and Touma’s name is Touma Fujima (or Fujima Touma? Idk which; the teacher called him Fujima). later that day, Konno’s rampaging at Mihane’s foot locker. while waiting for Konno and her friends to leave, Mihane overhears that the only reason Konno likes Touma is because he’s handsome and she’s cute; she doesn’t care about him or his personality. Mihane attacks her and her friends by flipping up their skirts just in time for Fujiki and Touma to see. Fujiki thanks Mihane and Touma laughs and says she’s amazing. after everyone goes home, Fujiki reminisces that Mihane only does stuff like that when people bad mouth Touma, and Touma reflects that he’s a terrible person

ch4: they’re making cupcakes in home ec! Mihane can apparently make desserts well because she learned from her uncle who studied as a patisserie in France for 10 years. she wants Touma to try her cupcakes, but he says he’ll just look. Konno convinces him to eat them but also try hers “so she can improve”. Konno’s mother is also a professional chef. I love how Mihane makes cupcakes; she’s so intense during the process then so calm while they bake xDDD Maria tries her cupcake, and it’s delicious! but she still gets poisoned… she’s now more immune to poison, though, so bonus! also, she got to take pictures of Mihane for her horror blog xD
the next day, Konno swaps out Mihane’s beautiful looking cupcakes with terrible looking ones, then eats the tasty ones. this backfires. while Mihane’s looking for the cupcakes she actually made, Konno gets sick while Touma is fine, so he realizes that Konno ate them! he goes off to find Mihane once he gets the other cupcakes back from Konno, then eats one. she tries to make him spit it back out, but he doesn’t, so he gets sick. Mihane carries him like a princess again, but he’s way more embarrassed since they’re at school. she quiets him with the handsome face of a prince xDDDD he thinks she looks so cool x’DDD

ch5: Touma gets a lot of confessions. Mihane accidentally overhears one and gets caught by Touma. she offers to be his bug repellent because of her “hideous” face, but he refuses. she thinks it’s because he doesn’t want her around that much. still, when girls start appearing at class, Mihane takes it upon herself to intervene without Touma realizing (not her best plan; if guy says “no”, maybe actually listen to his request) because she knows he doesn’t like hurting their feelings by turning them down. Fujiki points this out to Touma because he really had no idea. the next time a confession happens, he holds up a mirror and startles Mihane. she explains why she’s doing it, and he calls her annoying. she’s shocked, hurt, but she realizes and accepts that he’s right; she’s been harassing him and going against his wishes; that’s not what friends do or what people should do (this manga writes beautiful characters; they’re both ridiculous and amazingly real). Mihane leaves to go cry into the sunset with Maria

ch6: Mihane’s still dwelling on angering Touma, and it’s literally affecting her character xD so Maria hits her in the face with her bag, then gives her sagely advice (tough love, Maria; sometimes we need that from our friends). Mihane tries to follow Maria’s advice, but that’s easier said than done (I feel you, girl). after getting bored in the infirmary, she leaves and runs into Touma who was coming to give her a set of notes. while they chat, a group of girls see them, so Mihane runs away because she doesn’t want to cause him any more trouble.
while sitting in the park after school, she overhears girls from another school planning to ambush Touma and make him cry (apparently his name is Touma Yoshihiro; I have no idea where Fujima came from before). she’s not sure what to do; he doesn’t want her to intervene anymore, but he’s literally going to be attacked! she takes the hit in his place, even knowing it may make him mad at her, but he drags her out of there after and gives her his jacket to wipe her face with. he sees her as a girl, and he didn’t want her involved because he knows being called ugly all the time has to affect her; he was trying to protect her from herself. it really did bother her, and the fact that he noticed, makes her cry into his jacket again -but she gets pie all over her face again xDDD he calls her his important friend, and she realizes he must be the kind of person who falls in love gradually ❤

I do not own Soul Eater, so my reading has been done through fan translations online.  There were many times that chapters were missing and that pages were not translated or were translated poorly.  I mention these to say that my interpretations may be inaccurate and that I may have gotten some things wrong.

Soul Eater is 25 volumes long with 113 chapters.  My review will be below, and if you continue reading below the stars, you will see my explanation and my recounting of what I read.

Every post past this point will be a spoiler, so please read ahead with caution!

Review time!

5 star review

Plot: 1 star.  The main plot of Soul Eater is for Maka turn her weapon, Soul, into a death scythe. A sub-plot comes up along the way for the Kishin to be defeated. Many characters have their own sub-sub-plots below that, such as Ox getting Kim’s love, Black Star surpassing god, Kidd creating balance, etc., but I’m going to focus on the main plot and the Kishin sub-plot. I’m going to give Soul Eater 1 star for plots. It clearly has several, and all of them (except a few sub-sub-plots) are resolved. It does not deviate much from the main plots except to add direction for what will help achieve the main plot.

Art: 1 star.  The art was rough in the three introductory stories, but it clears up into beautiful composition. I’m not a fan of the dark, scratchy pictures that show up from time to time, but they are all very expressive, and they add a grittiness to each scene that helps me feel the situation. The action flows well, and it is easy to tell what is going on. I cannot get over the incredible battle scenes! They get my blood pumping; they’re so great!! Definitely 1 star, and I wish I could give more; it’s great.

Story Progression: 1 star. This one is harder to rate because I had some bad translations. I will say that this manga has a lot of story; it definitely seems more driven by story than action. What I mean is that any time a chapter was missing, I could tell; so much happens in each chapter that you really can’t miss any without becoming very confused. There’s a lot of great action, but it’s the story that carries this manga (the action just spices it up). I would have to give this a full star since the missing chapters and bad translations aren’t the fault of the manga.

Genre: 1 star. “Adventure, dark fantasy…” I would say Soul Eater follows that. There’s a lot of adventure, and it certainly has dark elements (Crona, anyone? That entire backstory? Holy crap; it’s so dark!) and fantasy. Witches, human children becoming weapons, black blood, madness clowns, and Excalibur; even though it’s set on Earth out of Nevada of all places, it’s pretty fantastical. Also, lots of the original bad guys are historic villains like Jack the Ripper and Al Capone in a fairly modern setting; it’s hard to do that and not be considered fantasy. I’ll say 1 star, though comedy could also easily be added in, as can ecchi; this manga has some funny scenes -and some sexy ones.

Enjoyment: 1 star. I want to be hard on this manga because it is one that I really like. The comedy’s great; the action is incredible; the art is intense; I love the character development; the lore is fun and interesting, but there are some moments that were hard. It is dark; I don’t like people of faith falling to sin; child abuse is terrible; succumbing to madness and losing heart; people being corrupted: these are all really heavy subjects. But I loved it enough to read it a second time, and I have recommended this to my friends. I will give it a full star for my enjoyment; it’s truly so incredibly made!

This story has reached and/or surpassed my criteria, so it has earned 5 stars!
I highly recommend anyone to read this if they like dark adventure manga!

ch108: so it sounds like Asura came from Shinigami-sama as did Kidd O.o Excalibur says that he will ensure <something? the translation is hard to understand, but I guess he’ll take care of things>. Asura reveals that he is Kidd’s older brother; they’re both fragments of Shinigami-sama, fear and order (they do look similar and now what Shinigami-sama was saying makes sense). Black Star rushes in, saying that even though he’s a human, that doesn’t mean he can’t surpass a god; Asura captures him and prepares to blow him away; Black Star does all he can to protect himself, but he can’t stop the blast (I actually had to take a minute before I kept reading; I was freaking out). Black Star captures the beam in his body and throws it back up with some blood; he knew he could surpass a god! he then reprimands Maka and Kidd for letting him go alone xD (don’t scare us like that, Black Star!!) everyone realizes that the black blood is keeping Asura from being hurt, so Soul’s inner demon asks him again to indulge in his own black blood, and this time, Soul agrees

ch109: Asura gets the upper hand, and everyone’s worried or stressed. Kidd fears that if he awakens as a shinigami, then he’ll become like Asura, but Maka reassures him. Soul starts to play the piano, and Maka and Black Star continue to fight. Maka’s resolve and confidence bring Kidd back, and he decides to face his fear and become a shinigami. Shinigami-sama’s mask begins to crack more.

ch110: Shinigami-sama’s mask begins to break apart (T_T). Kidd’s pupils become skulls, and as the 3rd line begins to connect, Shinigami-sama collapses. Shinigami-sama leaves the aftermath to Excalibur to please watch over Kidd, then Shinigami-sama turns to dust (ToT)
back on the moon, Kidd realizes that he has a controlled madness within himself that his father must have dealt with as well; it’s their belief in humans that helps them keep the madness controlled. Asura doesn’t like this one bit. the fighting continues, and Soul uses his black blood to its fullest to penetrate Asura’s defenses; Asura senses the attack and goes after Maka, stabbing through her(?) (someone got stabbed but it looked like a white shirt, so I’m not convinced it’s Maka)

ch111: I was wrong; Maka did get stabbed! poor Spirit is freaking out (poor papa) but she embraced the black blood along with Soul, so she’s fine. her outfit changes to accommodate her new power? Maka the magical girl xD she needs the others to get her an opening, but Asura’s not giving them a chance. Black Star jumps in the way to protect her, but his arm gets crushed and something serious happens to his spine; he’s not ready to quit though (Tsubaki’s worried though and that makes me worried T_T).
a shot comes from Earth; it’s Asuza fired by Kilik assisted by Eruka’s calculation magic. she sends calculations to Stein and Marie who launch the next attack. Sid wielding Spirit and Akane with Clay deflect Asura’s beam meant for Marie. Black Star and Kidd jump on Asura, leaving him open for Maka’s attack; she’s putting her whole soul into the kishin hunter!

ch112: Maka and Soul enter the Kishin. before, Soul was terrified to play the piano in front of people; the pressure got to him, but now, he has the courage to play again. Maka looks for Chrona within Asura. in the endless darkness of the kishin, Chrona holds on because s/he wants to see Maka once more. Maka appears, and when Chrona doubts it’s her, Maka chops Chrona with a book. Maka tries to get Chrona to leave, but Chrona realizes Asura can’t die as long as fear exists, and fear will always exist. Chrona can trap Asura in the mad blood, though, if Maka can make him bleed. the book Maka chopped Chrona with is the book of Eibon, and it contains Brew; Chrona will use Brew to magnify his/her power to trap Asura. Soul leads them to the exit with a melody of the souls they’ve encountered along the way; Chrona’s soul becomes to beginning (which is really the end when Maka and Soul return eventually).
outside, Black Star and Kidd are still fighting Asura, and they’re looking beat up. they use all they have to open the hole for Maka and Soul to come out; with a soul wavelength that connects them all, they manage it, unleashing kishin hunter, and allowing Chrona to use Brew to magnify mad blood. it’s enough to encompass the moon, but Spirit, Sid, Marie, and Akane get caught as well

ch113: last chapter! we see Rachel, whose body Medusa used, with her parents; they see the black moon. Maka starts to cry, but she realizes the souls have moved; Mabaa-sama saved everyone still trapped on the moon; now they’re safely at Shibusen. even Gopher escaped with all the copies of Noah (I count 6, but there should be 7, right, for the 7 deadly sins? or did greed die, so he’s not here anymore?). either way, Gopher’s ^ mouth turns into a W xD
Maka and co return to Shibusen, and Maka sees that her papa is ok, so she hugs Marie instead (so mean xD ); Marie’s soul response looks different, though…
Kidd returns to find his father dead. Excalibur explains that there can only be 1 shinigami at a time, after all; he doesn’t let Kidd dwell on his father’s death, though; this’ll be interesting for Kidd to deal with xD
on a side note, Maka seems very focused on boobs now? elsewhere, Black Star continues to train; now he’s learning to float on his own. the narrative acknowledges that he’s a bushin/battle god, so he’ll continue to surpass human limits. of course he’s training where he can see Tsubaki bathing to train his concentration, too xD he still gets hit with a shuriken for his trouble. the kid witch Angela is there, too, and Black Star promises his soul to her; if he’s not a real man, then she can have his soul. Angela’s good with this plan
Kidd is also now more focused on boobs, as is Patty. Kidd thinks it’s because Chrona didn’t have a mother’s love and that boobs are the symbol of maternity (Kidd’s words), so the world will gain a greater interest in boobs; he conducts a survey that shows the boob interest had increased by 50% (seriously, what is this, manga!? xD )
at his enthronement, Kidd announces his new plan for witches to join back into the rest of the world; Kim and Ox will be their go-betweens, and the witches were even invited to the ceremony. Soul is named as the last death scythe, and he’s changed his name to Soul “Eater” Evans. he plays the piano without fear in front of everyone, letting the world know that he is of the Evans family. this is the courage Maka helped him find, and everyone will do all they can to reach Chrona and Asura all the way up to the moon to show them that courage hasn’t failed. on a side note, Marie is pregnant with Stein’s baby.
The end!

ch96: Chrona only waited to tell Maka that s/he killed Medusa and can no longer go back; s/he finally feels free, and s/he has decided to go to the moon to capture the Kishin and wrap the world in madness; this is Chrona’s choice and plan because Chrona doesn’t feel compatible with the way the world currently works. even the door of the church that only opens inward, Chrona pushes it out to leave. Black Star tries to stop Chrona, but s/he says s/he doesn’t want to hurt anyone anymore; Chrona escapes, and Havar keeps Maka from chasing xer. they must inform Shibusen; Maka and Black Star will head to the moon as soon as preparations are complete.
Tezca keeps Shinigami-sama informed through the mirror (I guess he just lives there now); Kidd has connected 2 Sanzu lines. Stein and Marie finally kill Justin (he talks a lot without his earphones in).

ch97: Stein overcomes his madness after killing Justin; Kidd is ordered to retreat because Shinigami-sama has a message for him; Stein asks Marie to take Kidd back to the ship, and she agrees. Shinigami-sama has been negotiating with the witches so they can stop the Kishin; they want a shinigami to come finish the negotiations, so Kidd must go to the witches’ district. the death scythes will remain behind to continue fighting the clowns.
back at Shibusen, Eruka’s heard of the plan and thinks it seems valid (who is her Shibusen contact?). Free comes to get her out! but he actually got captured and is just with them on their way to bring Eruka to Shinigami-sama xD Enrique is there with Tezca (in a hand mirror), and apparently Free doesn’t like monkeys (something about monkeys and dogs? btw, I love Free; he’s such a dork xD ).
back in Italy: before Spartoi splits up, Soul and Tsubaki bought matching headbands for everyone. Soul drew his symbol on his; Maka’s apparently a painter, but she can’t draw, so she makes Soul do it. Black Star makes Tsubaki draw a star on his xD after splitting up, teams Maka and Black Star put on their old outfits with their new headbands and prepare to head to the moon

ch98: (and now this page says it’s actually ch 98; what happened to all those other chapters? I’m so scared and confused now…) Kidd wants to stay behind, but Marie convinces him that he has to go; the ship leaves. back on the moon, Sid meets up with Akane, Noah, and Gopher.
on Earth, Maka and Black Star are slowly making their way to the moon. at shibusen, Kidd’s back! he’s in a rush, but Kim and Jackie are still washing up. Kidd rushes into the shower area to help them, but Liz and Patty drag him back out xD the witches along with Free and Kidd will go; the weapons have to stay behind; Free’s very uncomfortable with Shinigami-sama and a monkey in front of him xD the portal to the witches’ realm must be opened by the youngest witch in the group, and it’s summoned by butt writing (what the heck, manga? xDD ). the witches probably can’t teleport to the moon because of the madness there.
they are all captured and put on trial by the witches. for working for Medusa, freeing Free, and helping Shibusen, Eruka is sentenced to 5 deaths (how does one die 5 times? that sounds terrible). Tabatha Butterfly, aka Risa/Lisa, is sentenced to 1 death for helping Shibusen and for being intimate with a death scythe, aka Spirit; Taruho Firefly, aka Arisa, has the same charges and will get the same punishment, but since she speaks against it, 3 more deaths are added to her sentence. Free is sentenced to 1,000 deaths for stealing Mabaa-sama’s eye and for escaping prison. Kimiearl Diehl is sentenced to one death for fleeing the assembly and for joining Shibusen; she tries to object, but since she has a block on her knees and can’t move, her objection is denied. Kidd is sentenced to one million deaths for being a shinigami.
Kidd’s had enough of this. he pleads with the witches for their assistance (it’s really beautiful; make sure you read it); he even breaks out of his bonds and lowers his head to the floor in order to ask for their help. the witch reading the charges wants to refuse, but Mabaa-sama herself intervenes (too bad Idk what “Nyamu” means); did she agree?!

ch99: Kidd is sent back early; the meeting is continuing as witches only. Kidd wants to believe in Mabaa-sama’s nyamu xD
on the air ship: repairs will take 4 hours, but Kidd wants to leave in 30 minutes; Gen will find a way, but if the ship gets hit even once, they’re doomed.
back on the moon: Sid just has to deal with the new complications. he prepares to drop a flare into the depths of the moon, but madness makes him hallucinate; they don’t know how deep the moon goes, but the Kishin is definitely down there.
back at Shibusen, everyone reminisces about the witches and how it all started… but of course the translation hasn’t been done on this page; all I can see is something about Excalibur xP Shinigami-sama and Eibon wrote the theory on weapon creation but locked it away; Arachne put it to use and mass produced weapons. with all these children in the world, Shibusen decided to find them and train them, and so the school was born. the children are still incomplete without a witch’s soul, though; so that’s why one is required to become a death scythe.
Kilik is on the airship, and he gives Kidd, Liz, and Patty armbands. Kidd has grown enough that he can wear it on one arm (woah!!), but he has to draw the picture perfectly xD they should reach the moon in 1 hour, but Kidd needs 4 hours to draw xD
Chrona enters the moon causing it to sneeze. Excalibur sneezes, too O.o (I wish I knew what it had said about Excalibur and the witches; jeez)

ch100: the death scythes are beginning to get tired. as some accept that they may die, Spirit tells them to keep up their hope because expecting death doesn’t make you stronger; they have to be willing to fight no matter what.
Maka and Soul now have to carry Black Star since they’re above the ocean; as they approach the moon, the beam clown attacks them; Maka flings Black Star forward, and he grabs the beams and throws them back; he says he can do it because he’s super awesome (I believe it, Black Star; that’s the only explanation xD ). Maka hesitates to come down because of all the enemies on the moon; Soul hacks the moon beams with his rhythm (that’s pretty cool; also kind of evil, though, Soul xD ). Maka and Soul attack the enemies with their own beams.
everyone works to believe in the witches, but it’s hard. something hits Shibusen, and Shinigami-sama immediately blames the witches, but it’s only Excalibur come to watch the fight. Shinigami-sama says it’d be great if Excalibur joined the fight on the moon, and Excalibur says the same back to Shinigami-sama; he has something he could do, but he’s holding back
Kidd decides to attack the moon, but Azusa has doubts; she thinks he’s being childish for believing in the witches because they don’t forgive or forget easily. Kidd says that a true change in beliefs requires action and that it’s adults who only talk, so he’ll gladly be a kid forever if it means he’s willing to put in effort for his beliefs. he asks the 36 crew members if they’re willing to join the fight, and they all agree (another beautiful speech; it’s definitely worth reading). full speed ahead!

ch101: while Maka and Black Star fight on the moon, Kidd puts his faith in the witches and orders the ship into firing range. the ship is shot through. Kidd continues to believe in the witches, and Mabaa-sama appears. the witches have arrived. with the help, the clowns can now be destroyed

ch102: Kim and Ox re-unite, and she smacks him for shaving his head, but it’s an expression of his fighting spirit! the witches leave now that they’re job’s done, though some stay (like Eruka and Kim). the main 3 clowns combine into 1. Maka and Black Star team up to defeat it.
Sid and co reach the interior of the moon and continue towards the Kishin. Noah’s carrying Toc inside the book of Eibon, and it prepares to use Brew to capture the Kishin.
on the surface of the moon, Maka and Kidd can sense the Kishin. Asura’s awake.

ch103: the madness begins to infect everyone, but Maka and Soul cleanse it with their melody. inside the moon, Noah attacks the Kishin, and Toc even powers him up with Brew. once they’ve grabbed the Kishin -who is unconcerned-, Chrona appears behind Noah

ch104: Chrona swallows Asura and Noah with mad blood; s/he spits Noah out, though. Maka can feel that Chrona absorbed the Kishin. the moon’s mouth opens to reveal Chrona; Ragnarok releases a scream of insanity, and Kidd asks Free to teleport those who can’t handle it away. Free warns him not to rely on the spell, but he casts it and teleports them away; even Kidd gets teleported xDD Stein also gets teleported. Kidd sentences Free to death, but he laughs it off because he’s immortal; Kidd is so bothered by this, but he has to fly back to the moon, so he’ll deal with it later xD
back on the moon: Maka tries to decide what to do; Spirit backs her up and says this is her fight; reassured, she asks Black Star and Soul to help her fight (I don’t think Spirit expected to be excluded xD ). there’s a bad translation on this page; Maka shouts something to Chrona; I think it’s supposed to say something about fighting Chrona until s/he returns to his/her old self, but I’m not sure. Chrona just smiles a little

ch105: while Maka attacks, Black Star acts as her guard and back up. Chrona knocks out one of the moon’s teeth, and Black Star throws it out of the way; the fight looks very strange from Earth xD Chrona manages to cut Maka and Black Star, injecting them with his/her own messed up wavelength; they drop their weapons because they’re out of sync, and Chrona takes them away. Black Star is confident he can fight without a weapon, but Maka doesn’t know what to do; Soul’s useless without Maka, too; she’s the speaker to his sound. Spirit climbs the moon back to his daughter; apparently, he’s in his 30s.

ch106: Black Star tries to get their weapons back, but he gets caught trying to protect Maka; with Black Star out of the way, Chrona attacks again, but Spirit blocks it; he says Maka must use him; she worries about their soul wavelengths, and he says it’s fine since she’s his daughter (I think it has more to do with his ability to match to others wavelengths though). Maka feels stronger than usual now that she’s using Spirit, and Chrona doesn’t understand it. Spirit explains that parents have a bond with their children that can’t be severed, and Chrona starts to snap because s/he killed Medusa; sometime in the fight, Soul and Tsubaki are gotten back from Chrona. Chrona’s consumed by xer own madness, releasing the Kishin.

ch107: Kidd finally makes it back to the moon. Spirit says the connection between a parent and child is a closed one that repels others, so he and Maka can’t reach the Kishin; she’ll have to use someone else to make a stronger connection; she chooses Soul while Black Star reaches for Tsubaki. they fight, but the kids aren’t surpassing Asura; Black Star’s power reminds him of someone, though. Kidd activates 2 of the Sanzu lines and prepares to awaken as a shinigami.
on Earth, Shinigami-sama’s mask cracks again. Excalibur asks if Shinigami-sama has overcome the fear of death, and he says no; he fears dying just like everyone else (oh no; my heart!!!)

Every post past this point will be a spoiler, so please read ahead with caution!

ch85: Tezca catches up to Justin in Ukraine. Tezca knows the general location of where the Kishin might be, but that’s all. they begin to fight

ch86: Shinigami-sama sent some Shibusen forces into Bagdad on suspicion that the Kishin was there, but he was not; Bagdad is now under Shibusen’s control after an anti-Shibusen faction there was wiped out (I’m sensing some political vibes here). Kidd decides to go to the Lost Island to search for the Kishin
back in Ukraine, though Tezca tries his best to reach Justin, it fails; Justin kills him once and for all

ch87: Chrona recounts a story s/he (I’m using this from now on; I should’ve just done this from the start) read growing up about all the ways to kill people. when Chrona gets back to Medusa, she praises him/her and makes xer favorite lunch, pasta. in Ukraine, Chrona used Mad Blood to engulf the death scythe, Czar, in black blood; when he fell to madness, he dissolved into the blood, turning it into a solid sphere of madness; Chrona then did the same to the nearby town, creating a much larger black blood sphere.
Kidd’s at the Lost Island (which is north of Alaska) where the magnetic field is. the real Eibon is in the field
back with Chrona! while Medusa praises him/her, Chrona recalls having to kill 3 rabbits as a child; if s/he didn’t, then s/he couldn’t eat for 5 days; after failing once, s/he killed them all like Medusa wanted; now Chrona can eat as much as s/he wants of his/her favorite food, and Medusa even gives Chrona a hug, but it makes Chrona snap because this isn’t the Medusa that Chrona knows. just before dying, Medusa says that the black blood is now complete since Chrona has thrown away his/her last attachment (JEEZ!!)

ch88: in Shiscepa Village, Maka, Soul, Black Star, and Tsubaki prepare for “the hunt” (whatever that is. on a quick side note, this page says this is chapter 78, but the site I’m on says ch88; I am very concerned now, but there’s nothing I can do about it Dx ) we meet Eihab the magical tank and Hemingu the village’s young hunter; if our heroes can catch the prey, then the village will prosper for an entire year (Idk what’s going on). so the prey is a giant sky whale. …. wat xDD anyway, Maka notices that at higher altitudes, the concentration of madness is higher
back at the Lost Island: Eibon references Excalibur as also being the kind of existence that can differentiate between knowing something and not being able to say something (I think Eibon is saying that Excalibur is also one of the old ones).
back with the others: Soul realizes that they can use sound to corner the sky whale (poor whale). when Hemingu takes the shot, he cuts Black Star’s scarf that’s been keeping him in the air xD Black Star decides to destroy the village, but Tsubaki, Soul, and Maka apparently stop him xD Maka realizes something about the Kishin, but then we cut back to Shibusen. They’re home! Marie has bad news, though; Chrona’s been added to Shinigami-sama’s execution list, and Spartoi must go after s/him.

ch89: Kidd thinks Shinigami-sama gave this job to Spartoi so they could make their own choice; Maka goes outside to search the world for Chrona using her soul perception -backed by Soul of course. while looking for Chrona, she finds the Kishin instead; he’s on the moon! Tezca reflected his own soul in his mirror, so from the grave, he tells Shinigami-sama his suspicions that Asura’s on the moon; Maka confirms, so a team is put together; Kidd is put on that team instead of Spartoi, so he leaves Chrona in Maka’ hands.
elsewhere, Toc plans to use Brew to obtain the Kishin’s madness to expand Eibon’s knowledge. also elsewhere, Noah and Gopher are going somewhere.
back at Shibusen! Maka sense Justin, and he knows it.

ch90: Maka continues to search with her soul perception while Ox and Havar try to track Chrona through their notes on Medusa’s movements. Liz and Patty have to write wills since they’re going after the Kishin, but they don’t have anyone to leave anything to. Black Star wants to join the Kishin mission, but he knows to respect Shinigami-sama’s decision, so he’ll stay with the Chrona mission instead (such growth, Black Star!). the last two death scythes arrive: Ding Diinga from Africa and Jingaran from West Asia; Tezca (from the mirror) and his monkey, Enrique, are also there for the meeting. down in the dungeon, Eruka realizes that Medusa is dead.
Spirit calls Maka to the roof to give her her mother’s wedding ring; it has a protection against madness written into the band. Spirit says Kami (Maka’s mother) is strong enough to resist madness but that she probably worried for Maka which is why she returned the ring (that’s sweet of him to say; I hope it’s true of Kami). he wishes Maka luck with dealing with Chrona and reminds her where she and Chrona met; realizing where to look, Maka runs off, and finds Chrona at the Santa Maria church with her soul perception; she thinks this is Chrona’s last attempt to ask for help.
Stein’s chosen as operation leader, and Marie worries that he’s enjoying this because he thinks he’ll die. Sid appoints long sword meister Hoshiakane and weapon Mareisaizumoa for the mission as well; they both work in Shibusen’s central info office (why have we never seen them before?). Shibusen reparation technician carpenter, Gen, has also finished the air ship and equipped it with magic tools for the trip to the moon.

ch91: the airship flies to the moon; they’ll be there in 10 more minutes (that’s cool but weird xD ). Justin’s waiting, and his clown companions begin attacking the ship. Kidd’s sent out, but he’s attacked by Clown Kaguya. Clown Shirousagi (meaning White Bunny) boards the ship and begins killing the crew.

ch92: the reception lady comes to help Kidd fight; apparently she’s so strong she doesn’t need a weapon (I’m reminded of Black Star; Kidd thinks of it, too). when Kidd makes an opening, she runs through with all the bombs to attack the enemy directly (rip office lady). Hoshiakane fights in the engine room against Shirousagi. Stein comes to help, and he kills the clown with one hit of his soul >3

ch93: Spartoi is in Italy. Havar is all for killing Chrona, but Kim doesn’t like it; Black Star says this mission is their decision, not an absolute order; Maka says she’s not sure what she’ll do until she meets Chrona, also, ps, she knows where Chrona is xD (I like the character diversity ❤ )
back to the moon: the ship has landed; no space suits needed. the receptionist lady survives the blast, but then Justin kills her and eats her soul (T_T). as the fighting continues, Spirit and Marie worry that Stein is becoming like the Kishin because of the madness

ch94: Spirit passes between soldiers to help with the battle, but when Justin appears, it’s for naught; he and Stein begin to fight. Sid slips into the moon’s nose to search for the Kishin while everyone’s distracted xD the clowns raise more fighters, and Kidd activates his madness to begin attacking. Noah and Gopher arrive at the nose, but they meet Akane and Clay (apparently these are their first names? these different translations are rough).

ch95: Noah and Gopher decide not to fight, and in order not to attract attention, Akane and Clay follow them in. in his own battle, Kidd activates the first Sanzu line (I wish he wouldn’t taunt the enemy before defeating them; just defeat them, Kidd xP ). Spirit says that Kidd must activate all 3 lines before they fight the Kishin. of course, the clown Kaguya summons more enemies because Kidd got cocky xP
back in Italia (Idk why it’s Italia now instead of Italy). Maka says she can’t find Chrona so everyone splits up; before leaving, Black Star says to call for him if she needs help; he knows that Maka knows where Chrona is. inside the church, Chrona doesn’t know who Maka is

ch78: Black Star just craves power; he doesn’t need to define it more than that. he and Kidd begin fighting again, but Black Star’s eyes are still crazed. he comments that Kidd’s goal of nothing is similar to his own. when Kidd disagrees, Black Star says it doesn’t matter the means if the result is the same (these guys make good foils to each other -opposites that bring out their qualities). despite Black Star’s eyes, he making really good philosophical points to Kidd about power, nothingness, symmetry, and the scope of gods (way to go, Black Star). he doesn’t limit himself to anxieties or worries; he doesn’t dwell on the future; he’s too busy running towards it. and when he’s strong enough to defeat everyone, he’ll figure out what to do after that; he’s not going to waste his time now thinking about it (good for you, Black Star!).
back in the chapter of greed, Liz flashes back to when she met Kidd. he saved her and Patty and asked them to become his left and right hands, and they agreed because they wanted his money, but after being with him, Liz realized Patty had never laughed so much before (we also learn their mom was the most beautiful whore -their word- in New York, but that she abandoned her daughters). even in the chapter of greed, Liz only wants Kidd and Black Star to come back safe. Liz cries as she realizes she never thanked Kidd.
back at the fight: Black Star’s using the insanity to gain power, but he won’t let it beat him. he also figured out what he wants to do once he’s the strongest, but the old one cuts him off.

ch79: Kidd thinks about everything Black Star said, and he realizes he wants the ultimate order which is different than nothingness. with this realization, he turns back ❤ welcome back, Kidd!! he even thanks Black Star who no longer has stars in his eyes ❤ Black Star’s going to help Kidd create a truly balanced world ❤ when the old one hears this answer, he decides to help them leave the book and will even bring the others out as well.
outside the book, the teachers approach the hide out, but as Tezca opens the door, he’s attacked by a giant worm thing; I’m pretty sure he’s dead… more worms appear around the others. Stein is fatally wounded (though not dead yet), Sid loses an arm, and Nygus and Marie are injured by Justin. before more harm can happen, Spartoi emerges from the book. Black Star and Kidd defeat the summoned manticore, and they all face Noah (so cool!). Kidd gives Noah the death penalty.

ch80: while Spartoi fights, the teachers face Justin who says he’d like to leave. he explains that his faith was in a way madness, so he decided to follow the leader of madness, aka the Kishin (while I don’t like that he’s fallen, I can see his logic. I still don’t like it though). he also knows where the Kishin is.
Noah’s using his collection to fight, so even though he’s one opponent, he’s hard to defeat. he even summons a horadragon (a giant, multi-headed dragon, with masks and a graveyard on its back).

ch81: when the dragon eats something, a new headstone appears in the graveyard (creepy). during his soul resonance, Kidd connects the second (the bottom) sanzu line, causing a crack in Shinigami-sama’s mask. the attack kills Noah (and possibly also the dragon). Gopher steals the book of Eibon and flies off; everyone is too injured to follow.
Justin went to where the kishin is which if I had to guess is the land of clowns because JEEZ there are a lot!

ch82: Kidd gives his report to Shinigami-sama whose mask is whole again (Spirit looks so sad and concerned though; oh my heart!). Kidd was never able to see Noah’s soul, he seemed like just a collection/manifestation of greed.
back in the book of Eibon, Toc talks about the three types of madness: madness of knowledge, of power, and of fear (I think we’re about to get a lot more lore). rules may have created madness, or it could’ve been the other way around. the book of Eibon wants to grant even more knowledge, but Stein says that too much knowledge leads to no more thinking.
Toc creates the Statue of Rage, aka Noah returns only now he’s powered by rage instead of greed? he grabs Gopher and tells him to follow him (I’m pretty sure he will).
back at Shibusen: Stein opens the bag with Tecza’s corpse, but it’s not him. Tecza faked his death to trick Justin, and now he must disguise himself with a chipmunk head instead of a bear head. … apparently, he also smokes.
over in Moscow: Chrona’s on a mission to kill a death scythe to grow stronger. she(?) finds Magic Bullet, Tsar Pushka to fight.

ch 83: (this translation is calling him Magic Shell Czar Puuzuka) but Czar/Tsar has an anti-demon wavelength like Maka which is why he was chosen for Chrona to fight. in Death City, Soul’s old wounds ache as Chrona fights. the death scythe and his meister are consumed by madness because of Chrona’s attack. Chrona is convinced she can only taint things, even Maka’s smile.
Stein, and teams Maka and Kim are sent to Moscow. Kim (last name apparently Diehl) tries to heal the defeated with her magic, and it seems to work. Maka and Soul are sent into the room housing the defeated death scythe and meister who are consumed within a giant ball of black blood. when Soul touches it, the madness overtakes him. he fights it off long enough to get outside, but then the scar on his chest splits into a gaping eye (kind of looks like a target actually because of all the rings).

ch84: Stein partners with Jacqueline to take on Soul. internally, Soul is faced with a much larger demon that keeps asking what he is. Soul’s body continues to fight, though. he sends out sound mixed with madness. out of concern, Kim hugs him to remove the madness with her magic. Maka joins the hug so her anti-demon wavelength can help. though Stein is calmer, he can’t fight like this xD he does a good job of dodging, though. while they fight, Soul continues to deal with his inner demon who hasn’t actually grown, he’s just controlling a larger suit. he comes out and asks again what Soul is. Soul answers that he’s Soul Eater the Death Scythe. Maka hits him for acting cool and for pulling her hair before xD Stein orders the Russian branch to close and raises the warning from level A to S. Chrona’s attacking a town in Ukraine now. a giant orb of black blood surrounds the entire thing…

ch72: the 4 witches are fitting with exploding collars – in case they get out of line. in a flashback, we learn that Maka’s the one who checked out the manuscript for the Book of Eibon; it wasn’t Medusa; Maka had been trying to research the black blood. Spartoi is deployed into the book with Medusa as their magical conduit. inside, they meet the index and learn they must go through 7 chapters to reach Kidd. chapter 1 is Lust, and everyone turns into the opposite gender with whatever traits interest/entice them xD a succubus collected by Noah appears, and Maka gets a nosebleed xD if they stay too long, though, their souls will simply become passages in the book.
outside, Noah has Brew, and he orders Giriko to get the “irregularities” out of the Book of Eibon (aka: Spartoi).
back in the book: Kidd faces a great old one, but not one of the 8 warlords. it’s wavelength is similar to Asura, and it consumes him (no, Kidd!!)

ch73: Kidd gets twisted by the darkness that consumed him. he realizes that nothingness is a step beyond symmetry, and now, he wishes to bring everything to nothing by killing everything (no, Kidd T.T)
back with Spartoi: Lizz summarizes everyone. Maka’s a solemn young man, Soul’s a bossy little princess, Black Star’s a naive girl, and Tsubaki’s still being pushed around by Black Star xD Liz got dumber in that she (currently he) only thinks about dumb things, and Patty just wants to hit things/people. Kilik speaks more formally and more feminine (I think a refined young lady), and Thunder and Fire still haven’t spoken but they’re uncomfortable with being the opposite gender now – poor babies. Blair turns out to be a hot guy who’s unaffected by the succubus; Blair’s a seducer, so she (now he) can’t be seduced. he easily attracts the succubus, then destroys it; Kilik swoons, and now it’s time to move onto the next chapter xD
now we’re in chapter 2, gluttony. everyone’s personalities are back to normal, but their bodies are still gender-bent xD they’ll change back with time, but the higher their sexual desire is, the longer it’ll take (hehe) >3 Maka thinks it’ll be Soul, but Tsubaki worries it’ll be her (I’m just going to use their usual pronouns from here on). Soul convinces Toc (the index; Table of Contents abbreviated) to take them to the next chapter before everyone falls to their glutton -Black Star, Patty, and Kilik were already lost and Maka and Tsubaki were about to fall as well. good for you, Soul!
chapter 3, Maka is alone at Shibusen; she has pigtails again despite being a boy (they’re short xD). she’s confronted by the stalker girl from real life -though I’m pretty sure this kid’s just an illusion within the book. welcome to the chapter of envy.

ch74: Maka’s now fully female again. the girl of envy convinces Maka that she’s only gotten where she is because of Soul and that she’s not a good technician. as Maka cries, Soul (now male) appears. his envy had to do with his older brother, Wes, who’s a higher level musician, but Soul won’t let that stop him. he takes Maka and himself to the next chapter (good for you, Soul! you are a cool guy ❤ ).
now in chapter 4, wrath. Black Star, Kilik, and Patty (all their correct genders) trade out death threats xD Tsubaki is still male and is stil calm xD Liz is also still male, but she’s not calm xD Black Star manages to calm down after Tsubaki yells at him, but then he sees Excalibur xDDD turns out he was captured, too. Liz is so mad that she’s crying xD while everyone’s freaking out, Noah’s looking into the book to examine the mayhem, and he calls it unsightly xD even Toc is so annoyed that he agrees to move on to the next chapter.
now in chapter 5, pride. despite everything Excalibur managed to get into the same chapter with them xD he offers to help them save Kidd; with 1 swing, they would be there! Liz (still male) steps up, swings, and throws Excalibur out of the book xD her pride got in the way, but no one blames her, I think they all understand xD
Maka and Soul are somehow in chapter 6, Sloth, as is Giriko. the last chapter really bothered Maka; she asks Soul to leave her behind.

ch75: back in chapter 4, Wes asked if Soul liked being with Maka because she didn’t know music, so she never made him think of it, but when Maka asks Soul what he saw, he says he didn’t see anything. Giriko attacks Soul and pins Maka to get revenge for Arachne, but Soul saves her again. when the fight really starts, Maka can’t focus because she’s still dwelling on her insecurities as a technician. Soul decides to fight on his own.
in chapter 7, greed, Liz turns back just moments before Tsubaki does; turns out that Tsubaki is the biggest perv in their group xD also Black Star shares a room with Tsubaki; he’s considering changing that now though. Blair is still a tom cat, so she’s actually the biggest perv of them all (no surprise).
the Shibusen adults find Noah’s hide out, Maka realizes she should trust Soul, and Kidd is convinced he should fight Black Star with his new goal of nothingness

ch76: I almost feel bad for Giriko; he waited 800 years for Arachne to come back, and then she died after just a few months; he’s a bad guy, but I get why he’s ticked at Maka and Soul. Soul uses the black blood and Arachne’s power to play Adagio of the Soul and cancel out Giriko’s sound. when he stops, Maka kills them. but then a female Giriko appears behind her! What?! turns out the male Giriko was just a golem; the real Giriko put some of his genes into a child and had Brew accelerate the growth, so now Giriko is female. she got a surprise attack on Maka.
now in the chapter of greed, Toc can’t take them any further; they have to be invited by the old one in order to continue. only Black Star is invited, but he promises to come back with Kidd. as Black Star falls, he passes Kidd, but with only one look, he realizes that Kidd has fallen to the darkness.

ch77: Black Star and Kidd fight briefly before the old one arrives and halts Kidd’s movements; he says he gives out power equally and then asks Black Star what kind of power he desires. a large white star -like his clan’s- appears in Black Star’s eye as he considers; he’s not losing himself again, is he?!
back with Maka: Giriko is so worked up in a rage that Soul’s piano can’t reach him; Giriko’s just too loud now. just before he can deliver the killing blow, though, Giriko’s soul begins to burst from all the blood lust; it’s too much for a soul. and so by wanting to kill Maka, Giriko dies instead (that’s kind of a cool story mechanic, but it also feels like a cop-out…)

ch66: Kilik, Thunder, Fire, Liz, and Patty are in Central Africa (with Azusa nearby) to look for something. They’re using artifacts called “Income” -that look like phone headsets, honestly xD I guess I hadn’t considered the technology level of Soul Eater before; hmm… they find where black blood was researched (I’m guessing by Medusa), and Kim looks at the documents Azusa transcribed through Kilik. The black blood is meant to manipulate insanity, something about the Kishin and Chrona. When Kilik and co leave, they’re attacked by the townspeople with guns, molotov cocktails, and rocket launchers. after escaping, the artificial clown known as the Black Clown (“born of Medusa”) appears to bring insanity.

ch67: it tries to ensnare the group in insanity, but it’s not strong enough to overcome them. while Kilik punches, Kim fries the counter-blood attacks. Medusa’s watching and controlling the clown to see how her experiment fares. when the black blood solidifies, the teens soul resonate, and with Kim’s magic, Thunder and Fire transform into teenagers (I think) and wield Liz and Patty – so cool!! apparently Fire is a boy, and Thunder is a girl (it’s hard to tell in black and white when they’re kids which is which…). the group uses E3 (Extreme Element Effect) which almost completely destroys Black Clown -initially scaring Medusa, but when she realizes her creation survived, she has it retreat.
elsewhere: we’re with Black Star and Tsubaki (Tsubaki looks so cute!! and I think Black Star’s gotten taller since the start of the series). they find Chrona.

ch68: now with Noah, he’s completed the Magic Belt which boosts magic items by 10%. He has Gopher test it, and it breaks.
back with Black Star and Chrona: Chrona merges with the Black Clown to create armor(?); she now has 3 swords, too. Black Star says he also has 3 swords: Zetsuei (Tsubaki), his hand blade (his hand), and what “every man always has” *headdesk* COME ON, BLACK STAR! xD their fight is epic. when Black Star gets tired of Ragnarok’s screaming, he starts screaming, too xD he punches Chrona through it all and brings up Maka, but Chrona’s forgotten Maka. More epic fighting, but Black Star’s definitely getting the upper hand. before Medusa can order a retreat, Justin Law shows up behind her; he’s wearing the sign of the Kishin instead of Shinigami-sama now (that makes me so sad; I hate to see religious people fall). Tsubaki tries to bring Chrona around, and Chrona mentions everyone from Shibusen before saying she doesn’t remember anyone (Medusa did say the insanity had stabilized in her…). Black Star calls Chrona an idiot for not trusting him because he’s the most important thing and the most reliable man in the whole world xD Chrona doesn’t know how to deal with reliable men or anyone else though… while Medusa deals with Justin, she orders Eruka and Mizune to help Chrona. the Mizunes obey immediately but Eruka just wants to go home

ch69: Justin fused with his Clown and almost decapitated Medusa! but it’s just a vision brought on by madness xP her portable Violet Clown (mostly) protects her from madness attacks. she says defying gods is in a witch’s job description xD during their fight, Tesca Tlipoca shows up. After a useless conversation, Justin vanishes. since Tesca has reflected Justin’s soul, then he can follow him(?).
back at Shibusen: Soul’s getting called out a lot and given letters for partner requests xD Maka reveals he’s always gotten letters but never this many.
elsewhere: Gopher is trying to beat/torture Kidd, but Kidd realizing that Gopher’s frown isn’t symmetrical is the real torture xD

ch70: the Cabaret witches come to Shibusen for an important meeting that they don’t take seriously at all xD when Black Star returns, he kicks the door down since it had a “closed” sign on it xD while they waste time, Kidd’s being tortured effectively by Gopher now =( one sleeve’s been torn off and lines have been drawn on only one side of his face; Kidd is seriously suffering…

ch71: Shinigami-sama ends the party; it’s time to get to business. if Arisa and Risa/Lisa (I’m using Lisa from now on) refuse to help, he’ll kill them or Sid will imprison them for life. since the book of Eibon is magic, the witches might be able to do something. Black Star shows up just then and pressed frog Eruka to Shinigami-sama’s face xD then Kim arrives, too; 5 witches (well 4.5 since Blair’s just a magical cat).
Noah stops Gopher and returns Kidd to the book where he immediately rips off his other sleeve. in the book, he discovers something dark and foreboding.

Soul Eater

I do not own this manga, so I will be reading fan translations online.  I am going to be doing shorthand descriptions on each chapter.  These descriptions are really more of a reminder to myself about what all I have been able to read so far.  Sorry if this bothers anyone!  I will do a full description on the final review page of each series I read.

Every post past this point will be a spoiler, so please read ahead with caution!

ch55: we learn Soul came from a musical family; his older brother Wes is good at violin, but Soul thought he wouldn’t be good enough, so he was glad when his weapon blood awakened; it gave him an excuse to leave. his demon tries to get him to get up, but Soul can’t (or doesn’t). when his demon abandons him, Soul starts to despair until Arachne offers to help him stand again. he accepts her help and thinks he’s saved– until Maka wakes him up. he realizes that he needs to get stronger. the group enters the room, but Arachne’s soul isn’t in her body! (didn’t this happen before? did this site upload chapters out of order?)
while Kidd’s looking for Mosquito, Liz and Patty reveal that they put a sleeping drug in Giriko’s drink, so he’s completely knocked out right now (I guess this happened in the chapter I missed). Kidd finds Mosquito in the control room, but he’s already fighting Eibon

ch56: “Eibon” isn’t the true Eibon; he just likes the name; when he fills the book of Eibon and obtains Brew, then it will be the same as becoming Eibon (basically). Mosquito returns to his 800 year ago form, when he was at this most incredible, but he’s killed in one hit by “Eibon” aka Noah. when Noah moves to collect Kidd, Kidd releases Liz and Patty before getting sucked into the book of Eibon. Patty wants to go after him, but Liz won’t risk her life.
outside: Black Star continues to fight Mifune who for some reason is using multiple sword style again? (weren’t they in a duel of pure skill?)

ch57: this chapter only had 3 pages, but did Black Star kill Mifune!? (why does this site keep doing this to me?)

ch58: Yep, Black Star killed him. as he fades away and Black Star falls to the floor, Tsubaki catches Mifune and obeys his last request to get him as close to the castle as she can.
inside the castle: Maka and Medusa deal with Arachne who has become “insanity” in the hopes of capturing the kishin. Medusa reveals that Arachne thought to create weapons because she read from the book of Eibon. Arachne mocks Medusa’s crush on Dr. Stein. She wipes Medusa out with one mental attack, but Maka -because of her anti-demon wavelength- can fight back. For some reason, Maka’s still asking Arachne where Chrona is? Is Chrona supposed to be here?
Arachne’s insanity tears at everyone’s minds like spiders, except Havar who is too dry to notice them yet.

ch59: while everyone else screams and suffers from the insanity, Black Star tells them to toughen up, sits up, then expels his wavelength to calm them all down; when did Black Star level up to this amount of cool!? So cool!! Noah is also unaffected by the wavelength. even Kidd can feel the wavelength from inside the book of Eibon.
While Maka fights Arachne, Soul realizes the insanity is being transmitted through Arachne’s web, so he plays his brother’s violin piece “the Meditation of Souls” on his piano (if you think about it, that makes very little sense, but I’m willing to go with it). it’s so effective that it even hits Arachne, knocking her back into physical form for Maka to destroy.

ch60: with his activated insanity, Soul gave Maka her black blood dress by accident, but it makes for good armor. Maka defeated a witch! While she’s distracted, though, Medusa transfers her soul into Arachne’s abandoned body. she lied to Maka about Chrona in order to get Maka to do what she wanted, but now, she plans to kill Maka who’s too dangerous to witches. Soul asks if Medusa killed BJ, but she says she didn’t, she just watched and that Dr. Stein should be finding the real culprit soon. A monkey then appears out of nowhere and starts attacking Medusa. …. There’s a death scythe meister with a monkey named Enrique. And the death scythe meister wears a giant teddy bear mask. … Never mind, it’s revealed that the teddy bear guy is Tezca Tlipoca, the demon mirror; the monkey is the meister?
Medusa decides to retreat. when Maka asks about Chrona, Medusa says the Chrona that Maka knew no longer exists, and then she vanishes.
The next page has Chrona naked in bed and Ragnorak around. wat

ch61: Giriko finally wakes up after everything is destroyed xD Stein says they have to take down Justin who then teams up with Giriko? What is going on?!
back in Death City: Tsubaki stands with Kim, Jackie, and the witch Angela before Shinigami-sama. everyone believes Kim should be ok against the witches’ destructive nature, but they worry about Angela. Kim thinks her magic can keep it in check, and Jackie reminds us of the moral manipulation machine. Shinigami-sama believes it’ll be fine. Angela asks when Mifune’s coming back (oh my heart!). Soul asks Black Star to join the “we’re all lying to Angela” club xP they don’t know how she’d react if she knew Black Star killed Mifune. Black Star doesn’t like it, but I guess he agrees?
at Shibusen’s East Asian Branch: Azusa talks with Shinigami-sama. apparently BJ had been looking into Justin Law’s background and found a lot of holes; also Justin has no alibi for the time of BJ’s death.
outside Death City: Justin’s coming back, but Stein and Marie find him. Justin retreats when he realizes that they’re too fast.
in Death City, Sid goes over a new plan with Shinigami-sama which Shinigami-sams dubs the “Shibukids Squad”.

ch62: Maka takes on serial murderer, Frey D Sadoko, and gains their 100th soul (again). elsewhere, Patty wins 5 spars in a row, surprising everyone with her strength. Black Star decides to take her on, but wants a handicap to make it worthwhile. while Tsubaki binds his hands at his request, Patty kicks him in the balls from behind and wins xD Liz is so proud xD while everyone continues to practice, Sid comes in to talk to Nygus. Black Star overhears him; Stein and Marie are back. they report back to Shinigami-sama about Justin.
meanwhile, Justin is working for Noah, along with Giriko, a clown, and someone else. their goal is to assassinate Maka, and Kidd can hear them.
back at Shibusen, the elite unit Spartoi (Stein changed the name from Shibukids Squad) gathers together. Spartoi is Greek for “the sown” who were a horde of skeletons that combatted insanity. Soul’s about to become a death scythe!! Spartoi includes the teams: Maka, Black Star, Kim, Kilik, Ox, Liz and Patty. OX HAS HAIR NOW!!

ch63: Soul and Maka may be able to fly because Maka’s soul has the grigori form that only appears in 1/50mil people. unfortunately they fail because Soul can’t imagine Maka as an angel xD Stein trains with Black Star, and Sid overlooks Patty and Liz’s target shooting while Tsubaki and Havar watch/play with Angela, Thunder, and Fire; Tsubaki’s great with kids ❤
elsewhere: Kidd is being disciplined by the mystery guy, Gopher, for re-organizing the contents of the book of Eibon xD

ch64: Maka and Soul can now fly, and Soul gave Maka adorable little wings like she wanted xD on a side note, everyone in Spartoi is now a 2 star meister/weapon. Noah attacks Maka! he also has a grigori soul. Maka’s losing because she doesn’t have the speed she needs with her poofy little angel wings. so with her urging, Soul gives her better wings; now it’s a proper fight.

ch65: Maka cuts through Gopher’s wings, forcing him to retreat. he takes his frustrations out on Kidd. elsewhere, Medusa tells Chrona it’s time to go, so Chrona cries and screams towards the sky (I’m super concerned by and about Chrona right now O.o; )

Every post past this point will be a spoiler, so please read ahead with caution!

ch51: Black Star is on the path of the warrior; his eyes are light right now. now with Medusa and Soul, Arachne’s dead? What!? How much did I miss with one chapter?! Maka says Arachne’s in the room. And now we’re back to Black Star and Mifune! the art work for fights is so good; I’m not going to go page by page because it’s so much better to see it than read about it, but on a side note, WHY IS BLACK STAR FIGHTING WITHOUT SHOES?!? OW!!
We learn that Sid was the one who originally brought Black Star to Shibusen; Black Star is also a little older than Maka. it seems Sid watched him the most while he grew up.
one wrong step, and Black Star could fall from the path of the warrior onto the path of carnage (I guess they mean “demon”?). Mifune gets rid of his tricks, and Black Star asks Tsubaki to become the weight of a normal katana. looks like this is the final show down; Black Star wants to be on even ground with Mifune (despite Mifune having shoes when Black Star doesn’t, and Black Star having broken fingers while Mifune doesn’t… this doesn’t seem even to me). during their fight, Black Star vows to become a Bushin (Idk what that is).

ch52: now we’re with Kidd, Free, and Mosquito. Mosquito returns to his form from 200 years ago, when he was at his fastest and his “nasal peak”. Kidd and Free fight surprisingly well together! They heavily injur Mosquito, but he’s not dead yet; he’s going to introduce them to true “H***” (his words).
Arachne’s room: Eibon exits!
Back with Kidd, Free, and Mosquito: Mosquito returns to his form from 400 years ago. He’s a vampire. Mosquitoes came from vampires xDDD the blood suckers!! xDDDD All amazing jokes aside, he wipes out Free and Kidd in less than one second O.O

ch53: Arachnophobia’s been turning Shibusen graduates to their side; they plan to take Shibusen’s place as master of the world. Kidd tells him not to intrude on the domain of gods (so cool! xD ). for some reason Kidd has Brew and it reacts with his soul; his middle hair line connects all the way around! he’s able to reattach his own arm thanks to the boost. Mosquito calls it one of the lines of Sanzu. Kidd says if it were any other situation, he’d be obsessing over this right now xD Free leaves to destroy the tower. Mosquito says that his 400 years ago form was his most numerous (wtc? xD ) Kidd able to block the barrage of bats with his stance of punishment which is “more defensive than that of sin” (these lines are amazing though also confusing). Kidd shoots down almost 8,000 bats that are Mosquito, but when Free destroys the tower, it disrupts the battle. Mosquito flees, and Kidd says they need to follow.
At tower 2, Kilik reveals himself (from what I remember from the first time I read this, the troops here are all ones who’ve been experimented on; that’s why they look weird. I think Kilik was also sent to this tower by someone in Arachnophobia because they mistook him for one of these failed experiments -since having Thunder and Fire on his head made him look misshapen. But I have no idea if this is right; I’m just guessing. I really seemed to miss a lot from that one chapter. that’s one thing Soul Eater does really well is put a lot of story into each chapter; that’s why they take so long to read, but they’re so great because of it, too).
Eibon chants “worm moire grimoire”; is he a witch? (also there’s a promotion for the Wii game “Soul Eater: Monotone Princess” that came out Sept 2008 xD it’s cool of the creator to draw something up; looks like Eibon was in the game, too.)

ch54: back at Shibusen, Shinigami-sama collapsed when one of Kidd’s Sanzu lines connected, but Spirit helps him back up. Shinigami-sama says he is proud of his child’s progress, and Spirit smiles in understanding. back with Kidd, it seems Shinigami-sama intentionally gave Kidd Brew. Kidd contacted Medusa and co; Eruka and Mizune will take out Free’s tower; Kidd’s new job is to create chaos in the center of the castle. Free was originally supposed to take out tower 1, then he headed towards tower 2, and somehow ended up at tower 8 instead xD
those in tower 2 are artifact soldiers! I’m not entirely sure what that means, but they each have a special ability or device, it seems. Kilik defeats two fairly easily, but one distracts Fire and Thunder, leaving Kilik alone. Now he’s having trouble xD
back at tower 1, the three Mizune sisters combine into a young teen girl. she defeats the guards while Eruka sets the bombs. in no time, they get out of there, mission accomplished.
back at tower 2: Kim, Jackie (returned to normal), Ox, and Havar arrive to save Kilik. Havar kills the entertaining artifact soldier, and everyone except Ox is terrified. towers 2 and 1 are destroyed.
at Arachne’s room, the door unlocks, triggering a magic attack! Maka and co are turned into wooden puppets! (Idk why Maka was looking for Chrona in there, though).
